Common Mistakes

1. Forgetting to convert all dimensions of an area or volume. 1 foot converts to 0.3048 m, but 1 square foot converts to 0.3048 x 0.3048 = 0.0929 sq m — not 0.3048 sq m. Always square or cube the conversion factor for area and volume calculations.
2. Confusing nautical miles with statute (regular) miles. 1 nautical mile = 1.852 km, while 1 statute mile = 1.609 km. Using the wrong one for marine or aviation navigation produces errors of about 15%.
